Jujutsu Kaisen fans are having the best day of 2025: the official announcement of a sequel to the main story. After the original manga ended in 2024, fans were waiting for more content not only because the Jujutsu Kaisen world still has so much potential but also because they missed the series. The fate of JJK was uncertain for a while but everything changed with the announcement of new manga projects by Gege Akutami.
In August 2025, it was confirmed that Gege Akutami will be back with a new manga series in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #41. And even more exciting, this new series is a direct sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen, set several decades after the original manga. Fans are hyped because their favorite universe is expanding again.
But this is bittersweet because Akutami also killed off two major characters from the original series: Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin.
In the Jujutsu Kaisen one-shot at the end of 2024, the story jumped forward several decades into the future. Yuta Okkotsu was revealed to be the leader of the Gojo Clan and had two grandchildren who looked like Maki Zenin — so fans speculated that Yuta and Maki got married. This was later confirmed by Gege Akutami in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. However, fans hoping to see these characters again will be disappointed. It has been confirmed that both Yuta and Maki are dead.
According to the first chapter of the sequel manga, Maki died first after living a long and happy life with Yuta. We don’t know the circumstances of her death yet.
Since the sequel is set over 60 years after the original story — some say even longer — it’s safe to assume most characters from the original generation are already dead. While the status of some characters like Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki is unknown, many have probably died of old age. Yuji Itadori might still be alive thanks to his connection with Sukuna.
With Yuta and Maki gone, the focus in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is now on their grandchildren Yuuki and Tsugiri Okkotsu. Expect new sorcery battles, mysteries and curses with new characters carrying the legacy of the original heroes.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo starts this week in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #41—cursed energy and epic battles incoming!
